A Safety Management System (SMS) is simply your company’s internal safety program designed to identify risk, improve operations, and maintain regulatory compliance. It doesn’t need to be complicated—an effective SMS should be practical, scalable, and easy for your team to implement.
The FAA now requires all Part 135 air carriers to comply with 14 CFR Part 5 Safety Management System requirements. Operators certificated after May 28, 2024 must implement SMS immediately, and all existing Part 135 certificate holders must have an FAA-compliant SMS in place by May 28, 2027.
